The name “Ka Makana Ali‘i” pays tribute to Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana’ole who conceived of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act allotting hundreds of thousands of acres of government land to Native Hawaiians. This permanent homeland is a perpetual gift and legacy that lives on today. The Ka Makana Ali‘i logo features ti leaves, a symbol of good luck in Hawai‘i that signifies prosperity. The encircled ti leaves represent the vision of Ka Makana Ali‘i as the “Center for West O‘ahu,” while the subtle use of hands in making the offering reinforces the meaning of the Center’s name, “The Royal Gift.”
Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole (March 26, 1871 – January 7, 1922) was a Hawaiian royal, freedom fighter, and Hawaiʻi’s territorial delegate to the U.S. Congress for 20 years where he worked tirelessly to secure resources and opportunities for Native Hawaiians. His most significant legislative achievement was the passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921, which set aside more than 200,000 acres of land for Native Hawaiian homesteads. Kūhiō also played a key role in developing Hawaiʻi’s transportation infrastructure, securing federal funding for roads, harbors, and lighthouses, and formalizing the territory’s county government system that is still in place today. His vision extended beyond politics, as he re-established the Royal Order of Kamehameha I in 1903 to strengthen the cultural and historical identity of Native Hawaiians.
Affectionately known as Ke Aliʻi Makaʻāinana, or the Citizen Prince, Prince Kūhiō was instrumental in establishing Hawai‘i’s National Parks, securing funding for the dredging and construction of Honolulu Harbor and lighthouses across the islands, and instituting the county government system we know today. In 1918, he founded the first Hawaiian Civic Club, a movement that has grown to encompass over 60 clubs across Hawaiʻi and the continental United States with a membership of over 3,500 individuals. The contributions of Prince Kūhiō are widely recognized throughout Hawaiʻi, with schools, buildings, streets, and parks named in his honor. The Prince Kūhiō Parade is one of four legacy parades recognized by the State of Hawaiʻi, and it brings community groups from across the state together to celebrate Prince Kūhiō's impact on Hawai‘i and its people.
